New Zealand Wine Landscapes 2027

Landscape-driven visual production across New Zealand’s Geographical Indications

Initiative Overview

Wineographic — New Zealand Wine Landscapes 2027 is a long-term visual documentation project across New Zealand’s wine regions, aligning with the Geographical Indications framework to visually define the landscapes that define each origin.

The project is led by Wineographic founder Oscar Oliveras, a former winemaker with over 15 years of international industry experience, including professional roles in Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay between 2014 and 2017.

Production begins in late 2026 and progresses region by region, aligned with seasonal conditions and developed in collaboration with participating wineries, regional wine associations, and tourism organisations.

Previous International Wine Landscape Projects

Wineographic’s fieldwork across multiple European wine regions provides a strong visual and methodological foundation for the New Zealand Wine Landscapes project.

The reel below brings together selected footage from these multi-regional productions, illustrating the landscape-led approach, cinematic language, and field-based storytelling that will shape the work in New Zealand.

Geographical Indications Framework

New Zealand’s Geographical Indications define the country’s wine regions through clearly established boundaries, providing a formal structure for origin and regional identity.

This project is built around that framework:

  • Northland, Waiheke Island, Auckland
  • Gisborne
  • Hawke’s Bay
  • Martinborough
  • Nelson
  • Marlborough
  • Canterbury
  • Central Otago

Each of these regions is approached as a distinct Geographical Indication, ensuring consistency between visual production and the country’s official regional structure.

Field Production Approach

The project combines aerial perspectives, landscape photography, and selective human presence to document the geographic identity of each wine region.

Production approach

Aerial landscape perspectives
Drone imagery revealing vineyard geography, parcel structure, and the broader regional landscape.

Landscape exploration and ground-level photography
Location scouting and field photography focused on vineyard environments, winery architecture, and surrounding terrain.

Seasonal and atmospheric fieldwork
Flexible production aligned with sunrise, sunset, fog, storms, and changing light conditions across the regions.

People within the landscape
Natural moments and environmental portraits that situate growers, winemakers, and vineyard teams within their working environment.

Regional Chapters & Film

The project is structured as a series of regional chapters developed independently across New Zealand’s principal wine regions. Each regional chapter is structured according to New Zealand’s Geographical Indications, ensuring visual consistency and clear territorial definition across the project.

  • Region-by-region production focused on vineyard landscapes, seasonal conditions, and regional identity

  • Curated visual chapters representing each territory as a whole rather than isolated estates

  • Optional short-format films for selected regions, supporting promotion, trade communication, and tourism visibility

Estate Participation

Participating estates may be represented within regional chapters through vineyard landscapes, environmental imagery, and natural moments captured during field production. This allows the project to reflect the broader identity of each wine region while occasionally including the people and places that shape it.

Selected imagery produced during the project may also be licensed for estate use. Separate estate-focused commercial production — including bottleshots, marketing photography, and short-format video — may be commissioned independently from the regional documentary project.

Project Rollout

Production begins in late 2026 and progresses region by region, aligned with seasonal conditions across New Zealand’s principal wine territories.

Regional chapters will be released progressively as the project develops, followed by a consolidated national edition.
